Sidney Powell was born in Durham, North Carolina and grew up in Raleigh. He graduated from Needham Broughton High School and then attended the University of North Carolina, where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees. She began her legal career as the youngest U.S. Attorney in the United States.
From 1978 to 1988, Powell served as Assistant Federal Prosecutor for the West and North Districts of Texas and the Eastern District of Virginia, where he handled civil and criminal trial work. She was appointed Head of the West District Appeals Section and then the Northern District of Texas.
In 1993, Powell established his own law firm in Dallas, Texas, primarily for the practice of federal appeals, and currently serves in the second, fourth, fifth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh federal circuits, as well as representing cases in the United States Supreme Court. His firm has also handled a number of high-profile class actions. She has now served as lead attorney in more than 500 appeals in the Fifth Circuit courts, resulting in more than 180 published opinions and a revocation rate of approximately 70%.
Powell is a member of the American Law Institute and a member of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers, where she served as president from 2001 to 2002.
Powell has made numerous media appearances as a political/legal commentator and as a published writer on the subject of the law. He has appeared on shows such as Lou Dobbs Tonight, Hannity, Shannon Bream’s program Newsmax TV and One America News, as well as several radio shows.
Powell served as producer of the drama Decoding Annie Parker (2013), providing guidance to help bring the film to a commercial release. The film was written and directed by Steven Bernstein and stars Samantha Morton, Helen Hunt and Aaron Paul. It tells the story of Annie Parker  and the discovery of the BRCA1 breast cancer gene. The film raised millions of dollars for cancer charities.
Powell also appeared in the cast of The Plot Against the President (2020), a documentary directed by Amanda Milius and based on journalist Lee Smith’s book of the same title.  The film examines the pre-U.S. presidential election circumstances of 2016, the subsequent power transition, and the events that occurred after President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January 2017.
