Biography

Hello, my name is Sinead Mc Cafferty, and I’m originally from Donegal. I now reside in Ballinameen with my partner Gary and 14-year-old son Donnacha, and I work in National Automation’s account department in Boyle.

When did you start running and why did you start running?

In September of 2018, I made the decision to start running. Growing up, I was always into sports; rallying and swimming were important parts of my life, and I played football all through high school.

When did you start working with Boyle AC?

I joined Boyle AC in April 19 and it was the best decision I ever made since I was trying to run 5k consistently and felt I needed the support of a group and club. With the help of Boyle AC Coaches and Club Members, I was able to get to and beyond 5K.

To you, how important is group training?

I find that Group Training pushes you to limits that you would not otherwise push yourself to, and the support and motivation you receive from the Coaches and Members is second to none, motivating you to keep pushing and not giving up. I find the tips from the more experienced runners in Group Training to be very valuable. Each session of Group Training has a structure, and we have nice banter during each session, which is what it’s all about.

What is your favorite form of exercise?

What are your least favorite activities? Hills (who doesn’t love hills?) and speed work

What’s your least favourite?

Long Distance Runs

Which of the races is your favorite?

The Slieve Bawn Ros Run was my first 10k; the race is difficult, but the view is lovely, making the hills easier.
What was your most serious injury and how did you recover?
I get shin splints and receive regular massages, which I find to be quite beneficial. After events, I go to the Recovery Lounge to utilize the compression boots to get the lactic acid out of my legs, and that really helps.
Do you have any amusing anecdotes from your time in Boyle AC? I don’t have any at the moment, but I’m sure I’ll have plenty in the future.

What’s your go-to pre- and post-race meal?

Pre-race: Eggs & Banana (I stock up on carbs the week before a race) Post-race: Steak, Veggies, and Potatoes Who is your athletic hero?

What are your running intentions after all of this? Mona McSharry (swimmer) and Craig Breen (Irish rally driver)

I’m looking for a personal best in the Galway 10k, and I’m planning to do the KCB Half Marathon next year after it was canceled this year.

What is one piece of advise you would give to a new Boyle AC member?

Be proud of yourself for entering the club; don’t give up; every night and day that you run, you’re passing someone on a sofa; keep that in mind.

Be proud of yourself after each session, even if it was a disaster; if you can complete an event, it will serve as a great motivator to keep you training and aiming for the next one; when doing events, remember that you are only competing against yourself; don’t be discouraged if your time isn’t what you expected or desired; always be proud that you participated in the race. Make goals for yourself.
Always have faith in yourself and be proud of who you are.
