I WORK WITH WOMEN OF COLOR TO ESTABLISH A MOVEMENT OF COMPLETE SELF-LOVE AND LIBERATION.
I’ve felt a connection to something greater than myself for as long as I can remember.
As a child, I was outspoken, rebellious, and a natural rule breaker.
As the sole person of color in a highly toxic household, I was unsure of my place in life – which made me angry.
I desired rescue.
And I knew I was destined for something greater than what lay ahead of me.
As a result, I searched.
Looked for solutions.
I used my acting, writing, and directing abilities to travel the world.
I first discovered the seeds of self-love during my time at Florida State University, when I had the opportunity to travel.
I was fortunate to live with a host family in Costa Rica, travel throughout Europe, live in Germany, and train at a London theater intensive.
As I met people from all walks of life, my consciousness began to expand.
I couldn’t help but wonder: “Wait, so everyone here is going to hell?”
That is not true.
That was not the case.
More had to be added.
I was certain this was not it.
I began by exploring meditation as a first step (which scared me because it meant going into my own head).
I completed my undergraduate studies, earned a scholarship to one of the nation’s top-performing arts schools, and relocated to New York City from Florida.
On the surface, my time at Tisch should have been magical.
Rather than that, I felt my mental state deteriorate.
In that graduate program, all my insecurities about not being enough were confronted.
I was out of my comfort zone because the program was so academic and I couldn’t see myself in any of my peers.
Nobody else resembled me.
Nobody had ever emerged from life quite like mine.
I was constantly terrified of everything.
I met the “love of my life” when I was 28 years old.
I regarded him as a savior.
For the first three weeks, the relationship was sweet as honey but quickly devolved into the most abusive relationship I’ve ever encountered.
“I hope this is the first time someone refers to you as a Bitch,” he said.
And it was at that precise moment that my mind opened.
I began to feel sorry for myself, as I had always done.
However, something clicked at that moment.
My own mother referred to me as a Bitch.
That was not the first time I had been addressed in that manner.
I recognized a fundamental truth: Nobody is coming to rescue me.
For years, I believed religion would save me.
Then I believed a man would rescue me.
However, in reality… I must save myself.
Every single one of us does.
With that clarity, I embarked on my own journey of self-healing.
Every penny I earned was used to purchase books, workshops, and any other event that taught me something about myself.
As I gained acceptance of myself, I sought out a community.
One with which I could identify — one populated by women who resembled me and shared similar experiences and values.
As a result, I started sharing my story on social media with the hashtag #curvyandcurly.
I had no expectations, and yet so many women began to contact, follow, and engage with me.
Some in a negative manner.
Most were seeking the same thing I was: self-acceptance, self-love, and the path toward liberation.
That is when the stars began to align and the pieces began to fall into place.
Today, I have an online community of over a quarter of a million people who are also on their own journeys of self-healing.
I’m in love with a man who is willing to develop independently and alongside me.
I have the impression that the world is my oyster.
I am a creator who is actively engaged in the act of creation and recreation.
Most importantly, I am content and excited to collaborate with you to create what’s next.
