Who is Scott Atlas? Scott William Atlas is a neuroradiology expert, political commentator, as well as health care policy advisor. A senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, Atlas recently resigned from his position as advisor on the White House Coronavirus Task Force. He was selected by President Donald Trump for the position in August 2020.

Working as COVID-19 advisor, Atlas had stated highly controversial claims regarding the disease, including that face masks and social distancing are ineffective in preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Atlas supported the establishment of herd immunity and reopening of schools and businesses during the pandemic. Moreover, he encouraged people to “rise up” against state restrictions during the pandemic. On November 30, 2020 Atlas gave his resignation notice.

Early life & education

Atlas was born on July 5, 1955 in Chicago, Illinois. Therefore he is 65 years old as of 2020. Atlas obtained his BS in biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and his MD from the Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Chicago.

Career

Atlas worked as Professor and Chief of Neuroradiology at Stanford University Medical Center, California from 1998 to 2012. Atlas is the editor of Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain and Spine, a 2.000-pages-long illustrated textbook with 83 contributors first published in 1991. He is the author of Restoring Quality Health Care: A Six-Point Plan for Comprehensive Reform at Lower Cost (2016); In Excellent Health (2012); In Excellent Health: Setting the Record Straight on America’s Health Care (2011); and Pocket Atlas of Cranial Magnetic Resonance Imaging (2001).

Atlas is the Robert Wesson Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution, joined the the Institution in 2003.

In 2008 Atlas was a senior advisor for health care to the Republican presidential campaigns of Rudy Giuliani and served similar position during Mitt Romney’s campaign in 2012.
