Who is randy paige? Randy Paige is a duPont award-winning reporter whose groundbreaking investigations have resulted in new laws directly affecting millions of Californians.
Since 1994, reporter Randy Paige has been a member of the CBS2 and KCAL9 families.
Over the years, he has covered war from an aircraft carrier, environmental pollution from the streets of Vernon to the campuses of southern California public schools. He also covers fake schools for foster children and helps clear the names of people wrongly convicted of terrible crimes.
Randy began in journalism in 1984 as a reporter in San Luis Obispo. Ten years later, he joined the families KCAL9 / CBS2 who were working on investigations.
“I’m kind of a Watergate-era kid,” Randy said. ‘I really believed in research reporting to try to bring about positive change.’
In 2002, he received the prestigious Dupont Award for his reporting on dangerous lead levels in L.A. public schools.
The impact on the families he met can be hard to accept.
“I think one of the hardest things about this job is to come face to face with people who have had a very difficult hand, children who have lost parts of their IQ because of lead contamination,” Randy said.
Lead contamination was also a problem that Randy faced in his series of stores in the thousands of homes poisoned by the Exide battery recycling plant.
The story of Brian Beach, the star of Long Beach High School, follows Randy to this day.
After the then-teen was wrongly convicted of rape in 2002, Randy worked with the Innocence Project to help trace the holes in the evidence against him.
The reporting made a difference: Randy was there to overturn Banks’ conviction.
He also fought to overturn the conviction of Kimberly Long, a nurse convicted of murdering her boyfriend.
“The people I will remember are the people who make great things out of their lives after they have had a very difficult hand,” he said. “It was a privilege to witness the heroic moments that take place every day.”
Over the course of his career, Randy has dealt with the famous, the infamous, the political and the military.
“I was able to land and take off from an aircraft carrier, get to know the people in our military who do great things every day, and enter communities that I would never have understood,” he said.
