Who is Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt? Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt, who led Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s funeral service, is a rabbi at Adas Israel Synagogue, Washington, D.C. Among Holtzbatt’s numerous pastoral and service leadership duties were being ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and co-creating the adult learning curriculum. She also co-wrote a feminist essay regarding the Passover story with Ginsburg. Additionally, she is a Schusterman Fellow, a member of the board at Avodah, an official at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism as well as the director of the Jewish Mindfulness Center of Washington.
Rabbi Lauren Holtzblatt spoke and sang at Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s funeral at the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
“This was The Life’s Work of Justice Ginsburg, to insist that the Constitution keep its promise that we, the people, would “include all people,”” she said. “She has done this work in every chapter of her life.”
She also sang Psalm 23 in Hebrew and ended with El Malei Rachamim, a prayer traditionally said for the deceased.
Holtzblatt is a rabbi of the Adas Israel Congregation in Washington, DC, who has revised the synagogue’s funeral programs and helped shape the adult education curriculum, according to the synagogue’s website. In 2015, she co-wrote a feminist essay on the Passover story with Ginsburg.
She is a Schusterman Fellow, a board member of Avodah, a committee member of the United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism, and director of the Jewish Mindfulness Center in Washington.
Holtzblatt was formerly director of the Hillel Foundation for Campus Initiatives and associate rabbi at Yale University Hillel and a rabbinical fellow at B’nai Jeshurun.
She was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary and is married to Ari Holtzblatt, who worked for Justice Ginsburg in 2014.
Holtzblatt told her congregation during a church service in Rosh Hashanah that she received the news of Ginsburg’s death and recalled a visit to the Courtrooms where Ginsburg explained to Holtzblatt’s daughter the importance of various items.
