Larry was born on November 1, 1942 in Lakeville, Kentucky. The boy’s parents were Baptist and Flynt attended a parish school. At the age of 15, the young man began serving in the army and then transferred to the navy. However, when Larry started training as an engineer, he decided not to pursue his military career and returned home.

In 1964, Flynt opened the first striptease club in Detroit. it was a profitable business that allowed him to open eight more houses in Columbus, Toledo, Akron and Cleveland in six years. To promote his clubs, Larry printed erotic brochures and informed readers of upcoming events; he had them mailed to the people free of charge.

Flynt got his audience in a while; it inspired him in 1974 to publish an adult magazine Hustler. The first issues were distributed among the regular readers. In contrast to Playboy and Penthouse, which were geared towards the elite audience, Larry’s publication was intended for the middle class.

Larry Flynt Publications

Two years later, Hustler’s edition hit three million copies. Larry Flynt was able to open his own publishing house, Larry Flynt Publications (LFP). Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis’s nude photos became a cheap advertisement for the thriving business. Magazine sales rose 50% over the next four years.

In addition to commercial success, Flynt had to face moralistic disputes. In 1976 the legal battle against Simon Leis began. In the end, Larry managed to prove his truth; the court found no violation of law in his actions.

In 1978 the situation became more tense: the serial killer and racist Joseph Franklin tried the businessman’s life and injured him. As a result, the man’s legs were completely paralyzed. According to Franklin, he attacked Flynt for promoting interracial relationships. The publisher was in a wheelchair for the rest of his life in excruciating pain. However, when the killer was arrested in 1980, Larry asked for the death penalty to be lifted.

In the 1980s, Hustler presented a new project: Pictures of Non-Standard Models (plump women, bodybuilders, albinos and middle-aged women). The unusual marketing strategy made Flynt the king of flashy sex and brought a lot of interest to the magazine.

In a while Larry began publishing articles on political and economic issues, corruption investigations, and zesty facts about power players. During Ronald Reagan’s primary campaign and presidency, Flynt used the magazine to fight him on the political stage.

In 1983, Hustle published an erotic cartoon about the famous television pastor Jerry Falwell. The pastor sued Larry for defamation and mockery of his feelings. The court took Flynt’s side and considered his actions legitimate within the American legal system.

Woody Harrelson impersonated the publisher, and the soloist of the group Hole Courtney Love played his wife Althea. The plot was based on the scandalous case of Flynt and Falwel. Larry himself contributed to the film and played the judge.

The following year after its premiere, the project won the Golden Bear at the 47th Berlin International Film Festival; It was also nominated for the Academy Awards in two categories.

In 2003 Larry ran for governor of California, but lost to Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2008, the businessman sponsored the pornographic film Who’s Nailing Palin, about Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, the candidate for Republican Vice President. The project was seen as an attempt to smear the candidate.
