Wiki

Ms. Schake spent three decades working at the intersection of government, media, business, entertainment, and technology before joining Disney. President Biden recently appointed her to lead the nationwide COVID-19 vaccine campaign, overseeing the federal government’s $1 billion national public education initiative. Ms. Schake previously served as Instagram’s Global Communications Director, where she was a primary advisor to the company’s founder and CEO and oversaw the communications and digital divisions in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

Ms. Schake has worked at the highest levels of government, including as First Lady Michelle Obama’s Communications Director and as Deputy Communications Director for Secretary Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign. She previously worked as a senior communications strategist for California First Lady Maria Shriver, the California Women’s Conference, and the California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities Initiative. Ms. Schake also co-founded the American Foundation for Equal Rights, which spearheaded a successful bipartisan public awareness campaign and legal challenge to restore marriage equality in California. She began her career as a speechwriter for Mayor Richard J. Riordan of Los Angeles.

Ms. Schake is a Johns Hopkins University graduate and a native of Sonoma, California.

Head of Global Communications

The Walt Disney Company has found its new spokesperson.

Kristina Schake has been appointed executive vice president of global communications for the company, reporting to chief corporate affairs officer Geoff Morrell.

Schake most recently led the Biden administration’s national COVID-19 vaccine education campaign, and before that she was Instagram’s global communications director. Schake, like Morrell and Disney’s previous head of communications Zenia Mucha, is a political veteran, having served as deputy communications director for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign and as special assistant to the president and communications director for Michelle Obama in the Obama White House.

She also previously worked as the chief communications strategist for California’s first lady, Maria Shriver.

“I couldn’t be happier to welcome Kristina to Disney and to have her leading the company’s communications,” Morrell said in a statement. “Her experience in the public and private sectors, as well as in political and corporate campaigns, makes her ideally suited for this important role and to assist me in integrating communications, government relations, public policy, and corporate social responsibility into a new Corporate Affairs team.” Together with Disney’s exceptional professionals, we will assist the world’s greatest storytelling company in engaging even more effectively with our many stakeholders worldwide.”

Morrell left BP to join Disney earlier this year. He was a former ABC News correspondent who worked as a Pentagon spokesperson during the Bush and Obama administrations. While Morrell is in charge of Disney’s public relations, he also has a broader remit. Mucha effectively replaces Zenia Mucha, who led Disney’s communications until her retirement at the end of last year.

Schake joins Disney at a critical juncture in its history, as the company deals with the fallout from its response to Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill. Employees were angry that the company did not take a public stance on the bill, but after reversing course and announcing that it opposed its passage, the company has been scrutinized by Florida legislators, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, who have used the company as a political punching bag.

In the year 2010

Kristina Schake will work as the First Lady’s Communications Director.

The First Lady’s Office announced today that Kristina Schake will join the team as Special Assistant to the President and First Lady Communications Director. She will begin working in the East Wing in December of 2010.

“I am delighted to welcome Kristina to the team. “Kristina brings a wealth of expertise that I am confident will make her an invaluable asset in the East Wing,” said First Lady Michelle Obama. “Kristina has done extensive work on child nutrition and community health issues throughout her career, and that, combined with her experience as a member of a military family, will bring invaluable insight to our work on childhood obesity and our efforts to support military families.” I look forward to working with Kristina on these and other projects in the coming months and years.”

Kristina Schake is the co-founder and principal of Griffin|Schake, a public affairs and strategic communications firm based in California. She has extensive experience assisting major foundations, non-profit organizations, and civic leaders in effecting critical social change through policy, legislative, social marketing, and media initiatives. Ms. Schake was the senior communications strategist for First Lady Maria Shriver, the Women’s Conference, and the California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities Initiative for several years. Ms. Schake and her company also aided in making stem cell research and early childhood education national priorities, as well as changing California’s political landscape on renewable energy and civil rights. She was the Director of the Governor’s Summit on Obesity and the Communications Director for First 5 California, which provides education, health care, child care, and nutrition programs to the state’s youngest children, prior to forming her firm. Kristina is a Johns Hopkins University graduate and a native Californian.
