Shotgun Video

Katie Bernhardt, the head of the Louisiana Democratic Party, is shooting her way into the race for governor this week with a video that shows her “firepower” with a shotgun.

The ad was made and paid for by the new Team Louisiana Political Action Committee, but Bernhardt is in it the whole time. It will start airing on Tuesday in Baton Rouge, Lafayette, New Orleans, and Shreveport.

Anthony “AP” Marullo, who is in charge of Team Louisiana PAC, and Bernhardt would not say that she is a candidate, but it is clear that the video is meant to introduce her to voters.

Bernhardt told USA Today Network that she will try to get the top Democrats in the state to agree on a candidate. She named Gov. John Bel Edwards, Congressman Troy Carter from New Orleans, and members of the state Senate and House Democratic caucuses as some of the people she will talk to.

Bernhardt, who lives in Lafayette, said in an interview, “The state needs good leadership.”

Marullo, a real estate developer from Metairie whom Edwards appointed to the Louisiana Housing Corp. in 2020, said in a text message about the ad, “When something causes a stir, I think it leads to the kinds of real conversations that lay the groundwork for change.”

Edwards is the only Democratic governor in the Deep South. He can only stay in office for eight years, so he can’t run for office again.

No Democrat has said for sure that they will run, but Edwards’ Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson is seriously thinking about it.

Attorney General Jeff Landry, Treasurer John Schroder, state Sen. Sharon Hewitt of Slidell, and state Rep. Richard Nelson of Mandeville are all Republicans who have already said they will run.

In the Team Louisiana PAC ad, the actors say that politics are “broken” and “ineffective,” and one of them says that it “sucks.”

Bernhardt responds: “I’m with Team Louisiana, and I’m here to let you know that help is coming. Just call me Katie, and I’ll tell you what I think.”
