Who is Jim Malatras? Jim Malatras is the fifth president of SUNY Empire State College. Before joining SUNY Empire, he was president of the Rockefeller Institute of Government, where he led the Institute’s modernization efforts to provide policy analysis and recommendations on factual issues to policymakers.
Dr. Malatras has held several senior positions in the new York State government. He was director of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s state operations, where he led the day-to-day leadership of the state government and was the government’s policy officer. He previously served as Deputy Secretary for Policy Administration for Governor Cuomo and as deputy director of policy for governor Cuomo’s successful campaign for governor.
Dr. Malatras, an education policy expert, served as executive director of the governor’s New NY Education Reform Commission from 2012-2014. Dr. Malatras was also previously executive director of legislative affairs and state policy for Attorney General Cuomo and legislative director of former congressman and current board member of the Rockefeller Institute, Richard L. Brodsky.
Dr. Malatras earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and a ph.D. in political science from the University of Albany.
