Who is Janice P. Nimura? Janice P. Nimura is an American biographer and historian who won the 2017 Public Scholar award from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Daughters of the Samurai: A Journey from East to West and Back is one of her most important works, it was a New York Times Notable Book in 2015. She currently resides in New York City.

“The only thing I know I’ll never be is a historian,” she told the university guidance consultant in 1988. She thought she wanted to be a doctor, but life intervened: she specialized in English at Yale University, worked in publishing, moved to Japan with her Tokyo-born husband, and completed a master’s degree in East Asian studies in Colombia upon her return to her native New York. I grew to understand that history was made of stories and fell in love with the search for archival treasures, especially when it led to the forgotten lives of trans-border women in the 19th century. Her first book stemmed from her personal interest in the closest encounters between Japan and the United States. In her latest project, she returns to her first interest in medicine, in the context of her work in the history of women.
