Who is Gord Gillies? Gord Gillies is a retired journalist with 38-year of journalism career. He is a former anchor and radio host at Global News Calgary since 1991. He attended Humber College in Toronto to study Radio and Broadcasting Arts and graduated in 1981.
Gillies along with the Global News Calgary team won the RTDNA award for Canada’s Best Newscast in 2013. In 2017, he received a Lifetime achievement award from the RTDNA for his broadcasting career and service for the community.
Gillies started his career in journalism as a copy boy at the Toronto Star in 1981. He has worked in several newsrooms across the country, including CBC, CTV and Global. He had covered the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary remains as well as the devastating floods in southern Alberta in 2013.
Gillies participated in many charitable activities, including volunteering with The Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, The Salvation Army, Hull Child and Family Services.

Gillies is married to Kandi Gillies and has two kids: Liam and Laura. However, their son Liam died on March 18, 2020, at the age of 25 after a tough battle with depression and anxiety.

Liam Gillies is known to be a sweet and kind-hearted person. He studied at Mount Royal University and used to work for Parks Canada, tending to the flower gardens in Banff, during the summer.
As told by Gillies, Liam had gone to rehab twice, where he made great progress the second time around. He had tried counselling and countless of other therapies and medications and testing.
In March, he had too much drink and slipped away in his apartment, only few blocks away from his parents home.
