Willis (Democratic Party) was standing for election in Georgia for Fulton County District Attorney. In the general election on November 3, 2020, she won.

Willis was a nonpartisan nominee for the 5th Supreme Court District of Georgia’s Atlanta Judicial Circuit Judge in 2018. In the general runoff election on July 24, 2018, she was defeated.

In the position of the next Fulton County District Attorney, God has equipped me with every instrument I need to succeed outstandingly. My deep background in criminal courts and leadership has given me a depth of understanding that applies to victims as well as offenders. More significantly, the experience gave me the confidence to do what was right.

Greetings, Fulton County Citizens:

For several years, I have been running for the position of Fulton County District Attorney at the request of neighborhood activists from all parts of this county.

While I have long embraced it as my call to “run” one day, as the time was not right, I rebuffed those immediate requests. Those calls for me to run have been a lot more regular and urgent in the last two months. I am currently, genuinely, proud to have been selected to serve as South Fulton’s Chief Judge, and my practice is flourishing. However, I cannot afford to sit on the sidelines and be in step with my Maker.

I went to the mountains, literally, and prayed to God to make my decision. I asked Heaven, “Why do I have to put the security of my family at risk?” Why do I have to forsake this life I enjoy? ”

The reply from Heaven, “To whom much is given, much is required.”

About Fani Willis

Fani Willis beat out Paul Howard, a long-time Fulton County District Attorney, and will take over his job in the new year, a position that Howard has held since 1997.

She will also make history, becoming, once she takes office, the first female district attorney for Fulton County.

Late Tuesday night, The Associated Press confirmed that Howard had admitted to the race. In what was the worst election showing he’s had since taking office, Howard came in second in the June primary.

Starting in the new year, Willis is set to take over as the office because there is no Republican challenger in November’s general election.

Willis is a law school alumna of Howard University and Emory University.

In her first four years as a lawyer, the biography on her website reads, she was in the private sector “representing citizens of Fulton County and surrounding areas in criminal cases, juvenile matters, family law and civil disputes.”

Beginning in 2000, Willis served as the City of Atlanta’s assistant solicitor for a year before joining Fulton County as an assistant district attorney in 2001.

Willis served with the Major Case and Cold Case Divisions of the DA’s office in a dual capacity within three years from 2004-2012.

She was then promoted to the Dynamic Trial Division’s assistant district attorney, where she helped prosecute “some of the most egregious, most multi-defendant cases in the history of Fulton County.”

“At the 2018 Georgian Legislature, Willis actively advocated the passage of a hate crime bill and was recognized as a strong advocate for children, victims of violent crime, the LGBT community, and domestic violence,” her website says.

Willis moved to private practice in 2018 and opened her own Atlanta law firm. Fani T. Willis, LLC’s law firms specialize in criminal defense, business and corporate litigation, civil forfeiture and family law.

Willis was elected pro tem chief municipal court judge for the city of South Fulton in 2019, a position she resigned from when she revealed that she was running for district attorney.

In 2015, Willis also created a charity named Love of Carla outside of her law practice, which raises awareness of sickle cell anemia in honor of her close friend, who is fighting the disease.
