Who is Dr. Theresa Tam? Dr. Theresa Tam (born 1965) is the 3rd chief public health officer of Canada since appointed on June 26, 2017. She also serves as an official advisor to the WHO’s  International Health Regulations Emergency Committee on COVID-19. As a physician she specializes in immunization, infectious disease, emergency preparedness and global health security.

The Hong Kong-born physician has contributed to a number of World Health Organization emergency committees and has been involved in international missions to combat Ebola, MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome) and pandemic influenza. Additionally, she has participated in the eradication of polio.

Dr. Theresa Tam’s background

Dr. Theresa Tam was born in British Hong Kong in 1965, she is 55 as of 2020. When she was young, she emigrated with her parents to the United Kingdom and she grew up there. She attended medical school at the University of Nottingham and earned her medical degree (BMBS). Upon graduating she immigrated to Canada and completed her pediatric residency at the University of Alberta, and then she get a pediatric infectious diseases fellowship at University of British Columbia.

Dr. Theresa Tam’s career

Dr. Tam has served a position at the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). At the time, she was also working as a specialist in pediatric infectious diseases at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Within PHAC, Dr. Tam continued to advance in leadership roles, becoming Deputy Head of Public Health, Deputy Minister for Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases until in 2017 she became chief public health officer of Canada, a position she currently holds.

Dr. Tam loves new challenges and that has taken her into the trenches of many global health initiatives, including polio eradication in Bangladesh. She was the first non-American member of the Stop Transmission of Polio Program team at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Early in her role as CPHO, she was at the forefront of Canadian responses to several outbreaks of communicable diseases, including H1N1 and SARS, and served as an international expert for the World Health Organization. In 2006, while serving as Director of the Division of Immunization and Respiratory Infections and Co-Chair of the Pandemic Influenza Committee, she helped update the Canadian Pandemic Influenza Plan for the Health Sector.

In addition to protecting Canadians from disease outbreaks, Dr. Tam set out the goal of advocating for reducing health disparities in key populations in Canada. She met Canadians face-to-face to better understand their difficulties, investigate disparities in public health outcomes, and gain a more intimate and informed perspective on stigmatization and discrimination that exist in Canada. Dr. Tam’s commitment to listening to the public, exemplified through her discussions with indigenous communities and people suffering from addiction during the opioid crisis, allowed her to make informed policy recommendations to people who have the power to act and create change.
