Alex Azar (Alex Michael Azar II) is an American politician, lawyer, pharmaceutical lobbyist and former executive of a pharmaceutical company that is the current Secretary of Health and Human Services of the United States, Alex served as Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2005 to 2007.

Azar was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, the mother of Lynda (Zarisky) and alex Azar. His father, Alex, is of Lebanese origin and is a retired physician of ophthalmology and a professor at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he performed ophthalmology in Salisbury, Maryland, for more than 30 years. Azar went to Parkside High School in Salisbury, Maryland, from 1981 to 1985. In 1988, he obtained a B.A. summa cum laude with the highest honors in government and economics of Dartmouth College in 1988, Azar was a member of the Kappa Kappa Kappa Fraternity. Later, in 1991, he earned a J.D. degree from Yale Law School, where he served as a member of the executive committee of the Yale Law Journal.

In June 2007, Eli Lilly and the company’s CEO, Sidney Taurel, elected Azar as the company’s chief lobbyist and spokesperson. Since the company wanted a member of the Democratic Party to take over, he elected Barack Obama, and Azar resigned from office. Later, in April 2009, Azar became vice president of Lilly’s U.S. managed health care services organization. And its subsidiary in Puerto Rico. That same year, the company paid $1.415 billion to resolve illegal charges related to its promotion of the antipsychotic drug Zyprexa (olanzapine) for unauthorized uses between 1999 and 2005. As of January 1, 2012, Azar became president of Lilly USA, LLC, the largest division of Eli Lilly and Company, and was responsible for all of the company’s services in the United States. Drug prices increased considerably under its administration. Azar also served on the board of directors of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, a pharmaceutical lobby.
