Jeffrey Scott “Jeff” George (born December 8, 1967 in Indianapolis, Indiana) is a former American football quarterback. He was the first overall pick of the 1990 NFL draft by the Indianapolis Colts. Jeff played for the Atlanta Falcons, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears.
George attended Warren Central High School, where he received the Dial Award for national high-school scholar-athlete of the year in 1985. Collegely went to Purdue University and the University of Illinois.
George was always known for his strong arm and it seemed he was destined for the NFL stardom. Yet a pattern of controversy followed him throughout his career, even though in college. He was transferred to Purdue after a year because the coach who recruited him, Leon Burtnett, was fired. Burtnett’s replacement was Fred Akers, who was known for his teams using an option-type offense that wasn’t to his liking. He then joined the University of Miami, but he withdrew when coach Jimmy Johnson wouldn’t guarantee him a starting job at QB-rich school. The Indianapolis schoolboy legend eventually left state school and became a Fighting Illini. He spent two years in Illinois and left with another year to qualify after being assured he would be drafted in the first five choices of the NFL draft (he was chosen #1).
