Who is Jake Auchincloss?

Public service connects two family wires for Jake. On the father’s side, it is a tradition dating back to the roosevelt and kennedy administrations. For his mother’s part, it’s an obligation: a way to give back to a country that welcomed a family of poor Jewish refugees – and that sent their son (Jake’s grandfather) to college.

After graduating from Newton Public Schools and Harvard College, Jake served as a captain in the U.S. Marines. His family had emphasized the importance of public service growing up, and it was his time to serve.

He commanded infantry in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2012 and a reconnaissance unit in Panama in 2014.

In Helmand, he led combat patrols through Taliban-fighting villages. In Panama, his team of elite reconnaissance officers worked with Colombian special operations forces to train the Panamanian public forces in drug prohibition tactics.

After returning home, Jake wanted to continue the service at the local level. He was elected to Newton City Council in 2015 and re-elected in 2017 and 2019. He now chairs the Committee on Transport and Public Safety, where he sets out the city council’s agenda for police reform and improvement of public transport.

Jake was the first elected official to endorse Ruthanne Fuller for mayor. She is now the first female mayor of Newton. Jake himself has been supported by Progressive Newton for the City Council because of his progressive positions on the environment, transportation, immigration and education.
